WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Colossians 2:12 says, For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

If you have decided to follow Christ, one of the first “next steps” in the process is to experience baptism. Just like a wedding ceremony lets people know that you are “taken”, baptism is a shout-out to the world that through being immersed with water in a public service, you identify with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. It’s a public proclamation that we are dying to sin and coming alive in Christ. Baptism is your public witness of moving from a seeker of Jesus to a fully engaged believer in Jesus.

Baptism is not an act by which we are saved; it’s an outward sign of what Christ has already done in our hearts.

AM I READY?

Romans 6:1-4 says, What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Anyone who has concluded that Jesus’ death on the cross was a sacrifice for their sin and the only way to bridge the gap between God and us, should choose to be baptized. By baptism, a believer is saying to the community, “I trust Christ alone for my salvation.”

BAPTISM BASICS

The Bible explains 3 reasons for baptism:

Jesus did it.

Matthew 3:13-15

He told the disciples to do it.

Matthew 28:18–20

He told us to do it.

Mark 16:16

I WAS BAPTIZED AS AN INFANT

Child baptism is a tradition in many churches where a child becomes part of the church community. If you were baptized as a child, you can be thankful for your spiritual heritage.

Child baptism happens because of your parent’s choice before you chose to follow Christ. Believer’s baptism is your decision after you follow Christ and represents God’s new life working in you.
